Scrap car removal and cash for scrap cars

A scrap car is a junk car that’s mostly metal now: the rust has gone through the floors, the interior is gutted, it burned, or it sat under water. Nobody’s driving it again, and that’s fine. It still has value, and it still needs to be gone.

What counts as a scrap car

• Rust-through: floors, rocker panels or the frame have rotted.
• Stripped: wheels, engine, transmission, seats or the catalytic converter have been removed.
• Fire damage: an engine fire or a full burn.
• Flood damage: a car that sat in water. In Illinois, flood vehicles with over 50% damage get a salvage certificate marked “flood.”

What a scrap car is worth

Cars are recycled at a remarkable rate. The industry group ReMA says automobiles lead steel recovery from consumer products “with a near-100% recycling rate annually,” in a 2026 filing to the U.S. Copyright Office. Scrap metal is bought by weight, so size matters: a full-size pickup or van carries more metal than a compact car. See junk trucks, vans and SUVs.

What else moves the number:

• The catalytic converter. It contains precious metals. If it’s been cut off, say so.
• Parts still on the car. A complete car is worth more than a stripped shell.
• Metal prices. They move over time, which is why we quote the car you have today.

Why scrap cars can’t wait on the street

Scrap cars are exactly what local codes target. In Chicago, a “hazardous dilapidated motor vehicle,” one with enough essential parts damaged or removed that it can’t run under its own power, can be ticketed and removed even on private property if it’s in full public view, under MCC 9-80-110(b). Cars kept inside a building are exempt. The suburbs have similar rules: Melrose Park treats an undrivable car visible from the street as inoperable after 5 days, and Oak Park allows a junked car on private property for only 24 hours outside an enclosed building. The paperwork

A scrap car needs the same proof of ownership as any other sale. Illinois scrap processors must get a title or another listed proof before taking a vehicle. If you sell to a buyer holding a state recycler or scrap license, with a properly assigned title, § 3-117.2 has the buyer file a Junk Vehicle Notification, and you don’t need to apply for a junking certificate yourself.
