Is your car worth more for parts or scrap?

Is it better to sell a car for parts or scrap?

For most junk cars, selling the car whole is better than parting it out, because pulling and selling parts takes tools, space and weeks of listings. Parting out can pay when a few parts are in demand and you have a garage to work in. Cash For Junk Cars Westside Chicago LLC buys the whole car and tows it free.

Every junk car is two things at once: a pile of parts somebody might want, and a few thousand pounds of metal. Which one it’s worth more as depends less on the car than on you: your time, your tools and where you’d do the work.

Where a junk car’s value comes from

  • Metal. Cars are the biggest source of recycled steel from consumer goods. The recycling industry group ReMA says automobiles have “a near-100% recycling rate,” with more than 15 million tons of steel recovered from about 12 million cars a year in North America, in a 2026 filing to the U.S. Copyright Office. Scrap metal is bought by weight, so a bigger, heavier vehicle carries more of it.
  • The catalytic converter. Converters use precious metals such as rhodium, palladium and platinum, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau. That’s why they’re stolen, and why a car without one is worth less.
  • Reusable parts. ReMA also notes that end-of-life vehicles “are an important source of reusable parts.” Engines, transmissions, doors, lights, wheels and modules that still work have a resale market.

Parting it out: what it really takes

Selling parts yourself can bring in more total money for the right car. It also means:

  1. A place to work. A garage you can tie up for weeks. On a Chicago street, a car in pieces runs into the city’s rules on hazardous dilapidated vehicles, which can be ticketed and removed even on private property if left in public view.
  2. Tools and know-how. Pulling an engine or transmission needs a hoist and some skill.
  3. Listing and selling. Photos, messages, no-shows, and buyers who want to pay less when they arrive.
  4. The leftover shell. At the end you still need someone to take what remains, and a car without wheels or an engine is harder to move.

There’s a legal limit too: under Illinois law, anyone who acquires five or more used vehicles a year to scrap them, or dismantles vehicles with machinery as a business, needs a Secretary of State license. Parting out your own car once isn’t that, but it’s not a side business either.

Parts vs scrap at a glance

Question Lean toward parts Lean toward selling whole
Do you have a garage or private space? Yes, for weeks No, it’s on the street
Popular model with parts in demand? Yes Common or very old model
Are the valuable parts still working? Engine, transmission and electronics are good Engine or transmission is the reason it died
How fast do you need it gone? No rush Tickets, a move or a notice on the car
Tools and experience? You’ve done it before You haven’t

For most West Side sellers, the street-parking column decides it. A car that can’t sit legally where it is doesn’t have weeks to be parted out.

When selling whole wins

  • The car is on the street, and the city or a suburb’s code gives you days, not weeks. Our neighborhood pages quote the local limits.
  • The engine or transmission failed, which takes the biggest-ticket parts off the table.
  • You’d be selling the parts to strangers from your home.
  • The car has been in a crash, and the panels you’d sell are the ones that were damaged.

When parts can win

  • You have a garage and the time.
  • The car is a model with an active parts market, and the parts that died aren’t the expensive ones.
  • You plan to sell a few high-value parts and then have the rest picked up.

If you go that route, be honest with the buyer of the leftover car. Our guide to why junk car offers change explains how missing parts affect a quote, and junkyard vs junk car buyer covers where the shell can go.

Questions people ask

What car parts have the most value on a junk car?
Usually the catalytic converter, the engine and transmission if they work, alloy wheels with good tires, and electronic modules or body panels in good shape. Which ones sell depends on the model.
Does a missing catalytic converter lower the offer?
Yes. Catalytic converters contain precious metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium, so a car without one is worth less. Tell us on the call if yours was cut off.
Can I strip parts and then sell the rest for scrap?
You can, but tell the buyer exactly what's gone. Missing wheels, the engine or the converter all change the number, and a car without wheels takes more work to load.
