Sell your junk car in Berwyn

Berwyn is bungalow country. Wikipedia credits the city with the most significant collection of Chicago-style bungalows in the nation, built block after block in brick during its boom years. For a junk car pickup that usually means a detached garage at the back of a narrow lot, reached from the alley.

The drive and the main roads

From 2727 W Chicago Ave, Berwyn is about 8.1 road miles and 16 minutes: down to the Eisenhower, west for about three miles, south on Central Avenue into Cicero, then west along Cermak Road into Berwyn.

The city’s edges are Oak Park to the north, Cicero to the east, Stickney to the south, and Lyons, Riverside, North Riverside and Forest Park to the west. Harlem Avenue (IL-43) runs down the west side. Ogden Avenue cuts across on the diagonal as old Route 66, which jogs north on Harlem to Ogden here. Cermak Road, Roosevelt Road, 26th Street and Pershing Road are the other through streets.

Where to tell the driver to look

• Ogden Avenue: the car-oriented strip, historically lined with dealerships.
• The Depot District: shops and restaurants around the Metra station at Oak Park Avenue.
• Metra BNSF stations: Harlem Avenue, Berwyn and LaVergne at Ridgeland Avenue.
• MacNeal Hospital: Loyola MacNeal, the city’s largest employer.

Bungalows, garages and the alley rule

Just over half of Berwyn’s homes are one-unit detached houses and another 28% are in two- to four-unit buildings, per ACS data. The smaller bungalows are mostly on the north side around Roosevelt and Cermak, with some larger homes to the south.

Berwyn has one rule that changes how you store a dead car: § 480.04 says no unattended vehicle may be parked on any part of an alley. So you can’t leave the car on the apron behind the garage while you wait for a buyer. Inside the garage or on your own pad is fine; the alley itself isn’t.

Berwyn’s 3 a.m. and snow-route rules

• 3 to 6 a.m.: § 484.08 limits on-street parking to cars showing a Berwyn vehicle license, a visitor pass or a temporary pass, unless posted otherwise.
• Snow routes: under § 480.05, parking ends on designated routes once 6 inches accumulates, including Cermak Road, Harlem Avenue, Oak Park Avenue, Ogden Avenue, Ridgeland Avenue and 26th Street. Roosevelt Road clears at 2 inches.
• Snow emergency: at 12 inches or more the city can declare one, and side streets switch to even-odd parking from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The city vehicle license costs $65 for a passenger car, or $40 if the car stays off the street from 3 to 6 a.m. (§ 462.04). A dead car is still a car you’re licensing.

When the city treats a car as abandoned

Chapter 468 defines an abandoned vehicle as one too run-down to drive, or one left unmoved for seven or more days that looks deserted. Vehicles abandoned on private property can be removed after 7 days, and towing follows a certified-mail notice with a short window to ask for a hearing.
