Forest Park is small, about 2.4 square miles, and most of it is within a few minutes of an Eisenhower ramp. That makes it one of the quicker suburban pickups from Chicago Avenue, even though it’s further out than Oak Park.
The route in
The usual drive is about 8.1 road miles and 15 minutes: Sacramento Boulevard to the Eisenhower, roughly five miles west on I-290, then off at Harlem Avenue (IL-43) and onto Madison Street. Westbound, the Des Plaines Avenue exit is also in the village.
Forest Park sits between Oak Park on the east, River Forest on the north, Maywood on the west and North Riverside and Broadview to the south. West of Harlem, Cermak Road is the line between Forest Park and North Riverside. The Des Plaines River runs through the village.
Landmarks
- CTA Blue Line: Forest Park station at 711 Des Plaines Ave is the end of the line, with a large commuter lot. Harlem station is at 701 S Harlem Ave.
- Harlem/Lake: the Green Line’s last stop, in the village’s northeast corner.
- Madison Street: where most of the shopping is.
- The cemeteries: Forest Home, Woodlawn, Concordia, Altenheim and the Waldheims are all inside the village and make easy reference points.
A car “on Madison, a block west of Harlem” or “by the Blue Line lot on Des Plaines” is easy to find.
Apartments, lots and the overnight ban
Forest Park is more of an apartment town than its neighbors. About 65% of homes are in buildings with two or more units and 28% are in buildings of 20 or more, per ACS figures. Many cars live in building lots rather than private garages.
The street rules push dead cars off the curb. Section 6-4-2(D) bars parking on any street for more than 15 minutes between 2 and 5 a.m., with shorter hours near the main corridors, and overnight passes are capped at five a month. Alleys are tight too: you can’t stand in one unless all four tires are on a private apron, and 10 feet of width must stay clear.
The village’s inoperable vehicle rules
Chapter 6-8 spells it out:
- An inoperable vehicle has parts removed, altered or damaged for at least 7 days so it can’t be driven under its own power.
- An abandoned vehicle is in disrepair and undrivable, or unmoved for 7 or more days and apparently deserted.
- Under § 6-8-4, leaving a dismantled, non-operating, wrecked or junked vehicle on any street is banned, inoperable vehicles on public or private property are a nuisance, and police can remove and impound them.
- The village gives a 10-day notice before removing an abandoned vehicle from private property and a 3-day notice for public property.
So the clock starts at seven days. If your car has been dead in the lot for a week, it already fits the definition.
Practical notes
Forest Park bars parking a car on the street to show it for sale, so a “for sale” sign on a dead car at the curb is its own violation. Every vehicle registered to a Forest Park address also needs a village sticker (§ 6-2-1).

Forest Park questions
- Can a car that doesn't run stay on a Forest Park street for a few days?
- Not safely. Village code bars leaving a partly dismantled, non-operating, wrecked or junked vehicle on any street, and no car may sit on a street for more than 15 minutes between 2 and 5 a.m.
- What counts as an inoperable car in Forest Park?
- The code defines it as a vehicle with its engine, wheels or other parts removed, altered or damaged for at least 7 days so it can't move under its own power. It's treated as a nuisance on public or private property.
