Maywood is the first village west of Forest Park, cut north and south by the Eisenhower. It’s a quick run out I-290 from our base, and the village’s parking rules mean most junk cars here are waiting in a driveway or a garage, not at the curb.

Route from Chicago Avenue

Plan on about 9.7 road miles and 17 minutes: Sacramento Boulevard to the Eisenhower, about seven miles west on I-290, then off onto 9th Avenue. The Eisenhower bisects the village, so cars north of it are usually reached from Lake Street or Madison Street, and cars south of it from Roosevelt Road.

Neighbors are Melrose Park to the north, Forest Park and River Forest to the east, Broadview to the south and Bellwood to the west. 1st Avenue (IL-171) is the main north-south road; Lake Street, St. Charles Road, Chicago Avenue, Madison Street, Roosevelt Road, 5th Avenue and 25th Avenue carry most other traffic.

Places people give as directions

  • Loyola University Medical Center: at the southwest corner of 1st Avenue and Roosevelt Road.
  • Metra Union Pacific West: Maywood station in the business district, and Melrose Park station on the border with Melrose Park.
  • The Illinois Prairie Path: the trail between North and South Maywood Drive.

Housing and where the car usually sits

Maywood is mostly houses. About 62% of homes are single-family detached and 60% are owner-occupied, per ACS figures. The rest are two-flats, three- and four-unit buildings and some larger apartments. A car that dies here usually gets pushed into the driveway, the garage or the space behind the house.

Maywood’s overnight ban

The village’s rule is simple and strict. According to the police department’s overnight parking page, there’s no parking on village streets every night from 2 to 5 a.m. Some streets never allow overnight parking at all, including 1st, 5th and 9th Avenues, Chicago Avenue, Lake Street, St. Charles Road, Washington Boulevard, Madison Street, Harrison Street and Roosevelt Road.

Temporary overnight permits are capped at five per vehicle a month. Longer permits under § 72.34 need a current village sticker and proof of residency and aren’t issued to single-family homes with a driveway, garage or alley access. Snow tightens things further: posted snow routes clear at 2 inches, every public street clears at 3 inches, and tickets and tows can start about an hour after the threshold.

Inoperable and abandoned cars

  • § 72.36 makes it unlawful to park an inoperable or abandoned vehicle on any street, alley or public right-of-way, and the last registered owner is presumed responsible.
  • § 99.03 sets the notice: personal delivery or certified mail plus an intent-to-tow sticker, with a tow possible 5 days after delivery or 7 days after mailing if no hearing is requested.
  • The village’s code enforcement office treats abandoned or inoperative cars and trucks as public nuisances.

Maywood also notes that three or more unpaid citations can lead to a wheel boot. A booted car has to be released by the village before it can be moved.

Getting it sold

Every motor vehicle stored in Maywood needs a village sticker, so a dead car still costs you each year it stays. When you call, say whether it’s in a garage or driveway and whether it rolls. If the vehicle is a work truck or van, read junk trucks, vans and SUVs first. Pickup details are under free junk car removal, and our guide on why junk car offers change covers how to keep your quote steady.

Maywood questions

Is there any Maywood street where I can leave a dead car overnight?
No. Maywood bans parking on all village streets every night from 2 to 5 a.m., and some streets, including 1st Avenue, 5th Avenue, Madison Street and Roosevelt Road, allow no overnight parking at all. Temporary permits are limited to five per vehicle a month.
I found an intent-to-tow sticker on my car. How long do I have?
Under Maywood's code, a tow can follow 5 days after notice is handed to you or 7 days after it's mailed, if no hearing is requested. Call us the day you find the sticker.
Can you pick up from a single-family home with a garage?
Yes. That's a straightforward pickup, and it's also why the village won't sell an overnight street permit to a single-family home that has a driveway, garage or alley access.
