Oak Park is the first suburb you hit driving west on Lake Street from our base, and it’s one of the few places near Chicago where a car simply can’t live on the street. That one rule shapes almost every junk car pickup here.

The drive from Chicago Avenue

From 2727 W Chicago Ave the trip is about 5.8 road miles and roughly 13 minutes in light traffic: west on Chicago Avenue to Kedzie, south to Lake Street, then about three miles west on Lake until you cross Austin Boulevard into the village. Cars on the south side of the village are often quicker by the Eisenhower (I-290), which runs through the south part of Oak Park.

The village is boxed in neatly. Austin Boulevard is the east edge with Austin across the street, North Avenue is the north edge, Harlem Avenue (IL-43) is the west edge facing River Forest and Forest Park, and Roosevelt Road closes the south side against Cicero and Berwyn.

Finding the car

Oak Park numbers its own streets. East-west addresses start at Austin Boulevard, and north-south numbers start at the elevated tracks just south of Lake Street, so a “200 S” address here isn’t where it would be in Chicago. The border streets, Austin and North, keep Chicago numbering. When you give us an address, add the nearest cross street.

Transit makes good landmarks. The Green Line and Blue Line have five CTA stations in the village, with the Green Line ending at Harlem/Lake on the village’s west edge, and Metra’s Union Pacific West Line stops at the Oak Park station. “Two blocks north of the Blue Line at Oak Park Avenue” gets a driver to the right block fast.

Why Oak Park junk cars end up in garages

Section 15-1-17 of the village code makes it unlawful to park on any village street from 2:30 to 6:00 a.m., apart from emergency vehicles and permit holders in marked bays. A car that won’t start can’t be moved off the street for the night, so owners push it into the garage, the back pad off the alley, or a spot in the building lot.

The housing explains the rest. Only about 43% of homes in Oak Park are single-unit buildings, and close to half are in buildings with five or more units, according to Census Bureau ACS figures. Apartment and condo residents often have one assigned space, and a dead car in it means the working car is out hunting for an overnight permit. The village also has more than 600 alleys, most built in the 1930s, and that’s where a garage pickup here usually starts.

What the village code says about junk cars

Oak Park is stricter than most places about cars that don’t run:

  • On the street: § 15-7-3 bans leaving any partly dismantled, non-operating, wrecked or junked vehicle on a village street.
  • On private property: § 15-7-4 allows such a vehicle to stay no longer than 24 hours unless it’s kept in an enclosed building.
  • Enforcement: § 15-7-5 lets police impound vehicles that appear to break these rules.

All three are in the vehicle article of the village code. In practice, a car with a flat tire and a dead battery in the driveway is already on borrowed time, and a garage is the only place it can legally wait.

Snow adds another layer. Two inches or more triggers the village’s snow emergency parking plan, which clears snow routes and moves cars to one side of the street by date. A car that can’t move is the one that gets ticketed.

Pickup notes for Oak Park

  • Garage off the alley: tell us if the car faces in or out, and whether the overhead door opens all the way. A car that won’t roll can be winched out; see our guide to getting a dead car out of an alley garage.
  • Apartment or condo lot: let the manager know a tow truck is coming. If the car blocks a neighbor’s space, mention it so we plan the angle.
  • Village vehicle sticker: Oak Park requires a vehicle license for resident-owned cars, and licenses run to July 14 each year (§ 15-4-1). Ask the village about your sticker once the car is sold.

Oak Park questions

Can you pull a dead car out of a garage off an Oak Park alley?
Usually, yes. Tell us how the car is parked, whether it rolls and how wide the garage door opens. Oak Park has hundreds of alleys behind its blocks, and a garage pickup usually starts from one.
My car doesn't run and I can't leave it on the street overnight. What are my options?
Village code bans parking on Oak Park streets from 2:30 to 6 a.m. except in permit spots, and separately bars leaving a non-running car on a street at all. If yours is stuck at the curb, call early in the day so it can go before the overnight hours.
How long can a junk car sit in my driveway in Oak Park?
Under § 15-7-4 of the village code, a dismantled, non-running, wrecked or junked vehicle can't stay on private property longer than 24 hours unless it's inside an enclosed building. A driveway doesn't count as enclosed.
Do you cover all three Oak Park ZIP codes?
Yes, 60301, 60302 and 60304, from North Avenue down to Roosevelt Road and from Austin Boulevard to Harlem Avenue.
