Little Village is the popular name for South Lawndale, and residents started using it around 1964 to set the area apart from North Lawndale. Today it’s centered on 26th Street, where the arch at 3100 W 26th St says “Bienvenidos A Little Village” over the start of a two-mile shopping strip.

The shape of the neighborhood

South Lawndale runs from Cermak Road on the north to the Stevenson Expressway on the south, and from Western Avenue on the east to Cicero Avenue on the west. A city landmark report describes it as a wedge with industry, rail lines and the Sanitary and Ship Canal around its edges and “an island of residential blocks” in the middle. Marshall Square is the other neighborhood name you’ll hear, toward the east.

North Lawndale is north across Cermak, Pilsen is northeast, and Cicero is west across Cicero Avenue.

Getting here from Chicago Avenue

About 4.5 road miles and 11 minutes: west to Kedzie, south on Kedzie for 2.6 miles, a short stretch southwest on Ogden Avenue (old Route 66), then south on Central Park Avenue. The 26th Street arch, between Albany Avenue and Troy Street, is about 4.3 miles by staying on Kedzie down to Cermak.

ZIP codes

Per the city’s boundary files, most of the area is 60623. The southwest part, roughly south of 27th Street and west of Kedzie, is 60632, and the east end from about California Avenue to Western is 60608.

Landmarks

  • 26th Street: “Calle Mexico,” once called “Bohemian Broadway,” running from the arch west to Kostner Avenue and hosting the Mexican Independence Day parade every September.
  • 26th and California: the Cook County Jail. The Pink Line’s California station is the closest stop.
  • Parks: Piotrowski Park at 4247 W 31st St, plus Washtenaw Park and Shedd Park, with Douglass Park just to the north.
  • Schools: Farragut Career Academy and the Little Village Lawndale High School Campus.

Two-flats on 25-foot lots

Most homes here are two-flats, three-deckers and cottages on narrow 25-foot lots, built in the boom before World War I, according to WBEZ’s history of the area. The median building dates to 1929, per CMAP. Narrow lots mean gangways between buildings, back lots off the alley and very little curb space.

A car behind the house can only come out through the alley. Tell us on the call how the back of the lot meets the alley and whether there’s a gate.

City rules to watch

  • Winter Overnight Parking Ban: Kedzie Avenue, 3 to 7 a.m., December 1 to April 1 (city page).
  • Two-inch snow routes: 26th Street, Cermak, 31st Street, California, Kedzie and Pulaski clear after 2 inches.
  • Permit zones: blocks such as the 2600 block of Hamlin Avenue and the 3000 block of Spaulding Avenue.
  • Abandoned cars: under § 9-80-110, more than 7 days unmoved and deserted-looking is enough for the city to act, and the last registered owner pays the towing and storage.

Trucks, vans and paperwork

For a work van or an old pickup, our page on junk trucks, vans and SUVs covers what’s different about them, and parts or scrap explains why a heavier vehicle can bring more. If the title is missing, start with selling a car without a title.

Little Village questions

My car is parked on 26th Street. Can you tow it without blocking the shops?
Yes. Tell us the block and whether it's near a corner or a loading zone. 26th Street is the busiest shopping street here, and loading quickly at the curb is part of the job.
I live south of 31st Street near Piotrowski Park. Do you come down there?
Yes. The southwest part of the neighborhood is in the 60632 ZIP, and it's covered the same as the rest of Little Village.
Can you pick up from a gangway or a back lot behind a two-flat?
A truck can't fit through a gangway, so a car parked behind the building is loaded from the alley. Tell us how the back of the lot opens to the alley.
Do I need plates or a city sticker on the car for you to take it?
No. Expired plates and stickers don't stop the sale. Take the plates off before the car leaves, and see our guide to the Chicago city sticker after selling a car.
